Exhibition CinéRené
23 May – 1 July 2012
Cinema room in the Magritte Museum

The Sesame Program from EDUCATEAM is aimed at social and socio-cultural organisations. It implements long term innovative projects, therefore making the collections from the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium accessible to all. Thanks to the sponsorship of GDF Suez, earlier this year Sesame gave young people from social organisations the chance to discover and personally appreciate surrealism and the work of René Magritte.

The visual and poetic creations (drawings, collages, ‘cadavres exquis’) presented here were made by young people aged 11 to 16 years, during creative courses and workshops in the Museum.

For this CinéRené project, photography and film were put at the centre stage, as they are the media most readily used by teenagers.

After an initial meeting at the associations, followed by a visit to the Magritte Museum then to the Cinematek, young people from four associations attended film workshops during the school holidays. Led by professional filmmakers Nicolas Rincon Gille, Florian Vallée and Manon Coubia, these courses allowed young people to make their own film. They imagined a scenario, drew a storyboard, learned to use photo and video tools, created a set, suggested sound effects, understood special effect techniques, and staged themselves in their own film.

“Participate, have fun together, going to the museum, learn new techniques, understand surrealism and the meaning of the paintings, be confident in yourself, find solutions, develop your imagination, no longer feel shy, work with pros, discover you have talents, see originals, laugh while working, be proud of the result, that is all we have experienced and felt in this project CinéRené.” Testimony of youngsters from the ‘asbl Caléidoscope’ and the ‘Foyer de jeunes de Molenbeek’.

Discover the four short films and the visual and literary achievements
by these young budding surrealists!
