Harry Torczyner
1910-1998
lawyer

In 1957, Magritte meets Harry Torczyner, a New York attorney with Antwerp roots.  A collector, as well, he had already acquired a painting by Magritte in 1948, The Therapist. Torczyner would become the artist’s legal counsel, and will play an active role in promoting Magritte’s oeuvre in the United States.  He was also essential in organising Magritte’s major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, December 1965. He also penned a monograph devoted to the painter. (Harry Torczyner, René Magritte: signes et images, Paris, Draeger, 1977).
